This 1867 5C RAYS Shield Nickel has been certified and graded by NGC as MS64. NGC’s encapsulation guarantees the coins MS64 Condition. The Shield nickel was the first United States five-cent piece to be made out of copper-nickel and was minted from 1866 to 1883. The shield nickel took its name from the motif on its obverse, and was the first five-cent coin referred to as a "nickel". The shield nickel was eventually replaced by the Liberty Head nickel.
