The gold dollar, also known as a gold one-dollar piece, is a gold coin that was struck by the United States Mint from 1849 to 1889. The coin had three variations over its lifetime. Type 1: Liberty wearing a coronet (1849-1854), Type 2: Liberty as an Indian Princess (1854-1856) and Type 3: Large Head (1849-1854), all designed by Mint Chief Engraver James B. Longacre.
